I met Bill Truby very early in my career. And, I have to say, that the things that I learned during the first few years out of college when I was working with Bill, are some of the things that made me successful throughout the entire rest of my career.
He gave me critical methods that were very very practical and very very easy to apply. And were effective.
So much so, that they became really the crux of my core management skills in all of the positions that I would have throughout what is now a 35-year career managing much larger teams, in much more complicated situations.
But, the methods of how to motivate the people who are working for me, and accomplish the goals that we’re trying to accomplish, were all done using actually very simple techniques.
Ones that were so profound and so obviously meaning to me, that here’s a sheet of paper from 1996 where I wrote down exactly what he said to me. And I knew that it was such a treasure that I carried it with me for all of these years.
And I’ve often referred back to it and reminded myself, no, no this is what motivates people. This is why people are going to work hard. This is why their work is going to matter to them. And why they are going to be easy to manage. If they understand these principles, then my job is going to be really easy.
