Last Updated on October 7, 2024 by Bill Truby
A lesson from yard work: it’s not just about hard work but working smart. Focus on what you want, like planting grass, instead of fighting problems, like pulling weeds. This approach makes all the difference in life and business.

When I was young, I did a lot of work.
I did a lot of side jobs. I worked my way through school, through college. I didn’t have any other money to rely on.
So I had to work to get the money that I was spending in my everyday life, and also what I needed to live and to go to school.
Part of my work was to do yard work.
I did yard work and I pulled weeds. I trimmed brush. I planted. I did all kinds of things.
And in my young mind, I was working hard but I didn’t realize that sometimes working hard isn’t the best thing to do… you got to work smart.
And there was one client that I had. One neighbor. Where their lawn was just beautiful and pulling weeds there was easy. And then there was another neighbor who had a bunch of brown patches of dirt. Weeds grew there like crazy.
And in my young mind, I realized that the reason the weeds weren’t growing in the great lawn, was because the lawn was
crowding them out.
And that became a life lesson.
Sometimes, you’ve got to stop pulling weeds and simply plant more grass.
