How do you become a valuable person to the people around you? The people you lead, your spouse, your children, your parents? How do you become a valuable person?
You can learn how to become a valuable person by understanding what makes things valuable in your mailbox. That’s the metaphor that will teach you the concept.
When you go to the post office, when you go to your mailbox, what things are valuable? Things that contribute to you: your paycheck, a birthday card, a letter from a friend or family member.
What things are not valuable? Things that take away from you: a bill, junk mail… takes your time to sort it. And that’s the simplicity of this concept.
Anytime something contributes to your life, it’s valuable. Anytime something takes away from your life, it’s not valuable.
As a leader, look at your team members. What do they need? How can you contribute to them? Things that will help them do their job better, things that will make them feel better, things that will inspire, things that will motivate them.
When you contribute to your team members in that way, and you’re not taking away from them, you become a valuable person, and people will want to work for you.
Contribution equals value. You can remember that every time you go to the mailbox.
