The Gift that Lasts Longer than Christmas

Gift of Appreciation (Achievement Nudge)

There’s something about Christmas that stirs us. Maybe it’s the lights, the music, or the warm nostalgia of a simpler time. Maybe it’s the act of giving—both the joy of it and, what can really get you stirred up…the stress of trying to get it just right.

We put so much thought into finding the perfect gift, the one that will light up someone’s face, the one that says, “I see you, I know you, I care.” But here’s a question: what if the gift they really want from you can’t be wrapped?

In all the consulting and coaching I’ve done, I’ve never heard someone say, “I wish I got a better present.” But I’ve heard hundreds say, “I wish I felt more appreciated.” Or seen their eyes tear up when someone finally tells them, “You matter. Not for what you do. But for who you are.”

We think we’re doing people a favor by buying presents. And sure, that’s kind. Generous. Even necessary in some traditions. But if we stop there, we miss the most transformational gift of all—acknowledging a person’s worth. Not just for their results. For their being

If you want to give something that lasts longer than Christmas morning, speak value into someone’s identity. Appreciation, when done right, doesn’t just say, “Thanks for the gift.” It says, “You are a gift.” That’s the kind of message that stays with someone for years. Sometimes for life.

So here’s your Nudge. This Christmas, when you give your gift—say something meaningful with it. Don’t just sign your name. Don’t just say, “Merry Christmas.” Look at them. Think about who they are, not just what they’ve done. And let them know the world is better because they’re in it. Because they are.

The wrapping paper gets thrown away. The food gets eaten. The decorations get boxed up. But appreciation that touches the soul—that gift lingers. And that’s a gift worth giving.
